Lima 2 Project

The new taxiway is a critical piece of infrastructure for Adelaide Airport to improve access to the main Runway. It will provide a second entry / exit point closer to the current main entry point for aircraft to the runway.

The new taxiway will also make it more efficient for aircraft taxiing to and from the runway

Preliminary works are underway now and the main construction will commence in February 2025. It is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Runway Closure

To facilitate construction of the new taxiway, some closures of the main runway and adjoining taxiways will be required. These will occur at various times throughout the project. We anticipate the cross runway will need to be used during curfew hours for a period of 6 weeks starting from late March, which will mean aircraft taking off and landing during this time will use an alternative flight path. More details can be found below under the ‘What Happens When the Main Runway is Closed’ section.

Changed Traffic Conditions

The project will see an increase in construction traffic which will access the site via Richmond Road and on occasion Export Park, utilising Sir Richard Williams Ave, Hamra Drive, Lum St and Comley Street. We expect to see these increased traffic movements across both the day and nighttime. During pavement construction there will be an increase in vehicle movements to the airport during the day. The truck deliveries will access the pavement materials plant, located at the end of Richmond Road. These deliveries will commence in late February 2025.

Adelaide Airport has two runways – the main runway (oriented north-east to south-west) and the cross runway (oriented south-east to north-west). Due to Adelaide’s seasonal wind conditions, the main runway is used for the majority of flights while the cross runway is typically used in strong crosswind conditions or when the main runway is not available for use.

To minimise disruption to flight schedules, works on the project will be predominantly carried out during the existing night curfew period (11pm to 6am) for up to 6 nights per week. This project requires periodic closure of the main runway while the works are undertaken, and the small number of curfew-exempted aircraft (majority of which are emergency services and freight operators) will be utilising the cross runway for arrivals and departures.

Cross runway operations, on average, include approximately 10 aircraft movements per night and up to 15 aircraft movements on a busy night during curfew hours.

The change in use of flightpaths is temporary and following the works, aircraft will revert to landing on the main runway during night operations. In addition, depending onn wind direction, aircraft will utilise cross-runway approach from the northwest wherever possible.

Adelaide Airport operates under a legislated curfew which was introduced to limit noise exposure from aircraft at night. The night curfew does not prevent all aircraft movements during the curfew period. It limits aircraft movements between 11pm and 6am by restricting the types of aircraft that can operate, the number of flights permitted, and the types of operation allowed.

On average, there are approximately 10 aircraft movements per night, and up to 15 aircraft movements on a busy night during curfew hours, the majority of which are emergency services and freight operators.

To ensure minimal disruption to aircraft operations, the majority of the construction work will occur at night, predominately during curfew hours from 11pm to 6am.

When the main runway is not able to be used there will be a temporary change in flight path particularly during the night curfew period (11pm to 6am). This may be noticeable to residents living under the cross-runway flight paths to the south-east and north-west of the airport within City of Charles Sturt, City of West Torrens, City of Unley, City of Mitcham, City of Marion, City of Holdfast Bay, City of Onkaparinga and Adelaide Hills Council.

Suburbs affected due to their alignment with the cross runway may include Belair, Clapham, Clarence Gardens, Clarence Park, Colonel Light Gardens, Daw Park, Edwardstown, Glandore, Henley Beach, Mitcham, Netley, North Plympton, Pasadena, Torrens Park and West Beach – please note this is not an exhaustive list.

Construction traffic is planned to enter the Airport from the end of Richmond Road or on occasion from Export Park via Sir Richard Williams Ave, Hamra Drive, Lum Street and Comley Street. As a result, tenants within Export Park may notice more frequent vehicle movements from February 2025 to August 2025.

We are expecting the works to be completed by late 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Aircraft using the cross runway may overfly residents to the south-east and north-west of the airport within the City of Charles Sturt, City of West Torrens, City of Unley, City of Mitcham, City of Marion, City of Holdfast Bay, City of Onkaparinga, and Adelaide Hills Council.

Suburbs that may be affected due to their alignment with the cross-runway flight paths include Belair, Clapham, Clarence Gardens, Clarence Park, Colonel Light Gardens, Daw Park, Edwardstown, Glandore, Henley Beach, Mitcham, Netley, North Plympton, Pasadena, Torrens Park and West Beach.

We are communicating with our local residents and the broader community through a variety of channels including social media posts, a letterbox drop to residents and businesses in specific areas located close to the airport. We will also notify State and Local Government representatives and various community groups. We also update the Adelaide Airport Community Consultative Committee regularly on the project and community impacts.
